Collecting Canadian Silver Coins: A Beginner's Guide

Collecting Canadian Silver Coins: A Beginner's Guide

Canadian silver coins are one of the most rewarding places to begin a collection. They're historic, widely available, and—because older coins carry real silver content—they hold intrinsic value on top of their collectible appeal.

Why start with Canadian silver?

Before 1968, Canadian dimes, quarters, and half dollars were struck in silver. Coins dated 1920–1967 are 80% silver (“.800 fine”), while pieces before 1920 are 92.5% sterling. That means many affordable circulated coins still contain genuine precious metal—a great foundation for a first collection.

Where to begin

Pick a theme and stay focused. A few beginner-friendly paths:

  • Type set: one example of each denomination and design.
  • Date run: collect a single denomination across many years.
  • Monarch set: coins featuring George V, George VI, and Elizabeth II.

Handling and storage

Always hold coins by the edges, and store them in acid-free flips, capsules, or albums. Never clean a collectible coin—cleaning almost always lowers its value.

Start small, buy the best example you can afford, and let your collection grow with your knowledge.
