DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
This is a 1919 Canadian 5-cent silver coin — a 106-year-old sterling silver piece struck under the reign of King George V, in the immediate aftermath of the First World War. A coin that circulated through one of the most transformative periods in Canadian and world history.
Struck at the Ottawa Mint (which had taken over Canadian coin production from London by this period), this five-cent piece bears the left-facing portrait of King George V by Sir E.B. MacKennal on the obverse — the dignified Georgean effigy used on Canadian coinage from 1911 through 1936. The reverse displays the denomination within the classic maple wreath design, the standard reverse for Canadian silver five-cent coins of the era.
The 1919 five-cent is notable as one of the last years the Canadian nickel was struck in 92.5% sterling silver — Canada transitioned the five-cent denomination to pure nickel in 1922, ending a decades-long tradition of silver coinage for this denomination. This makes the 1919 issue a meaningful transitional piece, among the final sterling silver Canadian nickels ever produced, and increasingly appreciated by collectors tracking the end of the silver five-cent era.
Obverse: Portrait of King George V by Sir E.B. MacKennal
Reverse: Denomination within maple wreath — struck at the Ottawa Mint
Diameter: 15.5 mm | Weight: 1.17 g | Composition: 92.5% Silver (Sterling)
A century-old sterling silver coin from a pivotal era in Canadian history — a must for collectors of George V coinage or pre-1922 Canadian silver.
