Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Manitoba's entry into Confederation on July 15, 1870, this dollar marks a pivotal moment in the building of Canada as a transcontinental nation. Manitoba was the fifth province to join Confederation, carved out of the vast lands of the Hudson's Bay Company as part of the settlement of the Red River Rebellion led by Louis Riel — a foundational and complex chapter in Canadian history that shaped the relationship between the federal government, Indigenous peoples, and the Métis Nation.
The reverse features a bold prairie crocus — Manitoba's provincial flower — set against a map outline of Manitoba, in a clean, modernist design that reflects the graphic sensibility of Canadian coinage in the early 1970s. This was also the first year the Canadian dollar was struck entirely in nickel, replacing the 80% silver dollar that had been discontinued the previous year — making the 1970 Manitoba dollar an important transitional issue in Canadian coinage history as well.
