This is a 2000 Royal Mint £5 sterling silver Proof coin issued to celebrate the 100th birthday of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother — one of the most beloved and historically significant royal figures of the 20th century, and one of the most popular commemorative coin subjects ever issued by the Royal Mint.
Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother (born August 4, 1900) was the wife of King George VI and the mother of Queen Elizabeth II. She became one of the most admired figures in British history, celebrated above all for her steadfast courage and morale-boosting presence during the London Blitz of the Second World War — famously refusing to leave Buckingham Palace even as bombs fell on the city, declaring that she was glad the Palace had been bombed so she could "look the East End in the face." Her century of life spanned two World Wars, the rise and fall of empires, and the transformation of the modern world, and she remained a beloved national figure until her death in 2002 at the age of 101.
