This is a 1902 Canadian 5-cent silver coin in a pleasing circulated grade — a 123-year-old sterling silver piece bearing the portrait of King Edward VII, struck in the very first year of his Canadian coinage series following the passing of Queen Victoria in January 1901.
Struck at the Royal Mint in London in sterling silver, this first-year Edward VII five-cent coin carries the fine portrait of the King by sculptor G.W. DeSaulles on the obverse — the only Canadian coinage portrait of Edward VII, making it instantly recognizable and perennially popular with collectors of the Edwardian series. The reverse features the denomination within a maple leaf wreath, consistent with the Canadian silver series of the era.
As a first-year-of-reign issue, the 1902 five-cent holds special significance — it marks the transition of the Canadian coinage portrait from Victoria to Edward, a generational change in the British monarchy reflected in the coins that passed through everyday Canadian hands.
