DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
This is a 1946 Canadian Silver Dollar in high choice AU/UNC condition — one of the most sought-after key dates in the entire George VI Canadian dollar series, and a coin that commands strong collector attention in any grade. In AU/UNC this is an exceptional and increasingly scarce example.
The 1946 dollar is widely regarded as a key date in the Canadian silver dollar series. With a mintage of only 93,055 coins — one of the lowest of the George VI era — the 1946 issue has always been difficult to locate in high grades. In AU/UNC condition, where virtually all original mint lustre is retained and any wear is limited to the very slightest friction on the absolute highest points, this coin represents a genuinely premium example that would be competitive in any serious Canadian collection or registry set.
The reverse features the iconic voyageur canoe design by Emanuel Hahn — introduced on the Canadian dollar in 1935 and considered one of the finest coin designs ever produced by the Royal Canadian Mint — depicting a voyageur and a Native Canadian paddling a birchbark canoe beneath a setting sun, with a loon flying overhead. The obverse bears the left-facing portrait of King George VI by T.H. Paget, used on Canadian coinage from 1937 through 1952.
Struck in 80% silver at the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa, this large coin contains approximately 0.600 troy ounces of pure silver — giving it significant bullion content on top of its already strong numismatic premium.
