This is a 1976 Bicentennial Eisenhower Dollar — one of the most iconic and historically significant commemorative issues in all of American numismatics, struck to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
The Eisenhower Dollar series was introduced in 1971 to honour President and Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower, who passed away in 1969. For the 1976 Bicentennial, the US Mint replaced the standard reverse design with a special commemorative reverse featuring the Liberty Bell superimposed over the Moon — a design by Dennis R. Williams that elegantly combines two of America's greatest symbols: the Liberty Bell representing independence and freedom, and the Moon evoking the Apollo lunar landings of 1969, during which Eisenhower-era NASA missions first began taking shape. The obverse retains the dignified left-facing portrait of President Eisenhower by Frank Gasparro, alongside the special dual date 1776–1976.
The Bicentennial Ike Dollar was struck at both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints in copper-nickel clad for general circulation, as well as in 40% silver at San Francisco for collectors. The circulation clad version offered here is a beloved piece of American history — large, bold, and immediately recognizable — and remains one of the most collected US commemorative coins of the 20th century.
