This is a genuinely rare and historically significant 1870 Newfoundland 20-cent silver coin — a 155-year-old piece struck when Newfoundland was still an independent British colony, decades before it would eventually join Confederation in 1949 as Canada's tenth province.
Struck at the Royal Mint in London in sterling silver, this coin is part of Newfoundland's distinctive and much-admired colonial coinage series, which ran independently of the Canadian federal coinage system. The 20-cent denomination is unique to Newfoundland — no other Canadian province or territory issued a 20-cent coin — making it an immediately recognizable and highly collectible rarity in North American numismatics.
