DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
Original 1951 Sudbury "The Big Nickel" aluminium commemorative souvenir token.
This interesting Canadian numismatic piece was issued in connection with Sudbury, Ontario,
a city internationally associated with nickel mining and production. The design references
Canada's famous 5-cent coin and the importance of nickel to the Sudbury region.
The obverse features the portrait of King George VI, while the reverse identifies the piece
with "THE BIG NICKEL" and 5-cent denomination imagery associated with the famous Canadian
nickel coin.
Struck in lightweight aluminium, this piece is a collectible souvenir/token rather than
an official Canadian circulation 5-cent coin. It is an interesting addition to collections
of Canadian tokens, Sudbury memorabilia, exonumia, mining-related collectibles and
Canadian numismatic history.
