DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
```This 1913 Buffalo Nickel Type 1 is an early example of one of the most recognizable and popular United States coin designs of the 20th century. The Type 1 variety is distinguished by the raised mound of ground beneath the buffalo on the reverse.
Designed by renowned sculptor James Earle Fraser, the Buffalo Nickel was introduced in 1913 and features a Native American portrait on the obverse. The reverse depicts an American bison standing on a raised mound, accompanied by the denomination "FIVE CENTS".
The Type 1 design was used during the first part of 1913 before the reverse was modified later that year. The raised ground beneath the buffalo was replaced with a recessed line and the inscription "FIVE CENTS" was moved to a protected area to reduce premature wear.
This specimen is described as Very Fine (VF), showing moderate circulation wear while retaining a good amount of the original design detail. Major elements of the buffalo and portrait remain clearly visible, making this an attractive grade for collectors seeking an affordable example of the scarce early Type 1 design.
The Philadelphia issue carries no mint mark. Please examine all photographs carefully for the exact appearance, surfaces, coloration, patina and remaining detail of the individual coin offered. Photos are considered part of the description.
```HISTORICAL CONTEXT
```The Buffalo Nickel was struck from 1913 to 1938 and has become an iconic piece of American numismatic history. Its design was intended to evoke the spirit and character of the American West, incorporating imagery inspired by Native American culture and the American bison. The 1913 Type 1 is especially interesting to collectors because it represents the original version of the Buffalo Nickel before the reverse design was modified.
