This type of mint error occurs during the blanking process at the mint when the metal sheet used to punch coin blanks overlaps a previously punched hole, leaving a curved portion missing from the planchet before the coin is struck.
The coin shows a clearly visible clipped edge, creating the distinctive curved shape associated with this popular mint error. The remaining design elements of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and the classic maple leaf reverse remain well defined.
