Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint to commemorate the 450th anniversary of Jacques Cartier's first voyage to Canada in 1534, this coin celebrates one of the most pivotal moments in Canadian and North American history. Cartier, the French-Breton explorer commissioned by King Francis I of France, sailed into the Gulf of St. Lawrence in 1534 and was the first European to document the interior of what would become Canada — claiming the land for France and setting in motion four centuries of French presence on the continent that shaped the bilingual, bicultural nation Canada is today.
The reverse features a striking portrait of Jacques Cartier alongside his ship, evoking the courage and spirit of the Age of Exploration. The coin was designed by Carola Tietz and struck in 100% nickel at the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa — the last year of the large nickel dollar before the introduction of the Loonie in 1987, giving this coin added significance as a member of the final generation of Canadian large dollar coins.
