DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
This is a 1950 Canadian Silver Dollar — a 75-year-old 80% silver coin bearing the portrait of King George VI and featuring one of the most celebrated designs in Canadian numismatic history. A substantial and historically rich piece from the heart of the postwar era, containing nearly two-thirds of a troy ounce of pure silver.
The 1950 dollar holds particular interest for collectors as a key transitional year within the George VI dollar series. The 1950 issue is well known among specialists for featuring the famous "Arnprior" variety — a die variety where the water lines to the right of the canoe are partially missing due to die polishing, creating a distinctly different appearance that commands significant premiums over the regular issue. Whether this example is a regular strike or an Arnprior variety is best confirmed by examining the water lines under magnification — extra photos are available upon request.
The reverse features Emanuel Hahn's magnificent voyageur canoe design — introduced on the very first Canadian dollar in 1935 and widely regarded as the finest coin design in Canadian history — depicting a voyageur and a Native Canadian paddling through still northern waters with a loon in flight overhead. The obverse carries the dignified left-facing portrait of King George VI by T.H. Paget, used on Canadian coinage from 1937 through 1952.
Struck in 80% silver at the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa, this large coin contains approximately 0.600 troy ounces of pure silver — making it one of the heaviest silver coins ever issued for Canadian circulation and a meaningful bullion piece in addition to its numismatic value.
