This commemorative loonie honours Elsie Gregory MacGill — the legendary "Queen of the Hurricanes" — a pioneering Canadian engineer, aviator, and women's rights champion whose extraordinary achievements helped shape both Canada's war effort and its social fabric. MacGill was the first woman in the world to earn an electrical engineering degree and the first in North America to earn a master's in aeronautical engineering — completing her studies while recovering from polio with unwavering determination. During WWII she oversaw the mass production of Hawker Hurricane fighter aircraft at Canadian Car and Foundry, earning her iconic nickname and cementing her place in Canadian history. She later served on the Royal Commission on the Status of Women in Canada, fighting throughout her life for equality and opportunity.
