DETAILED DESCRIPTION:
```A fascinating early Canadian colonial token from Upper Canada, this 1820 "Commercial Change" Halfpenny is an excellent example of the private merchant tokens that circulated during the colonial period.
The obverse features a sailing sloop traveling to the right, accompanied by the inscriptions HALFPENNY TOKEN and UPPER CANADA. The reverse displays two crossed shovels above an anvil with the inscription COMMERCIAL CHANGE and the date 1820.
The sailing vessel is particularly appropriate to the history of Upper Canada, where small sailing vessels and sloops played an important role in transportation and commerce on the Great Lakes. The crossed shovels and anvil on the reverse are associated with trade, labor and industry, giving this token a distinctly commercial character.
This token is catalogued as Charlton UC-9 and Breton 727. Several die varieties are known, including varieties identified by the position of the bowsprit in relation to the final "A" of CANADA, as well as differences in die alignment and reverse details.
Please examine all photos carefully for the exact condition, surfaces, patina and details of the specimen offered. Photos are considered part of the description. This is an original historical token and not a modern reproduction.
```HISTORICAL CONTEXT
```Colonial Canadian tokens such as this one were used to help facilitate everyday commerce at a time when official small-denomination coinage was often scarce. These privately issued pieces became an important part of Canada's early numismatic history and are highly collectible today for their historical designs, varieties and connection to Canada's pre-Confederation past.
