Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint to mark the 100th anniversary of Canada's Arctic Expedition of 1913, this quarter honours one of the most ambitious and historic voyages of exploration ever undertaken in the Canadian North. Led by Vilhjalmur Stefansson, the Canadian Arctic Expedition set out to chart unknown territories in the Beaufort Sea and the Arctic Archipelago, producing landmark geographic and scientific discoveries that shaped Canada's northern sovereignty. The reverse design evokes the vast, icy landscape of the Arctic, paying tribute to the courage and endurance of those early explorers.
